Smart Cities

Smart Cities (also sometimes referred also as ‘Digital Cities or Intelligent Cities) is the natural evolution of current ‘smart’ ICT based on ‘context-aware’ services. The intended evolutionary step is to evolve from current ad-hoc and simpler systems which help one individual (e.g., smart watch) or one building (e.g., smart home) into two main directions of generalization. One is to provide each individual with more interconnected smart services, the other one is to create interconnected services beyond single individuals and are more based on the common interests of whole urban regions. Latest advances in digital technologies and on their uptake by societies seem to indicate this evolutions are feasible. There are still considerable challenges to address, not only at technical level, also at the level of relation between humans and ICT. Developing such powerful level of services in a urban centre will require a healthy multi-stakeholders approach from all main society actors.
